Boulle marquetry

Boulle marquetry course for beginners

This one day course will enable the student to create a small Boulle marquetry panel.  The traditional marquetry motif chosen for this course is ideal as a first marquetry exercise.  It is taken from the front door of a wardrobe at the Wallace Collection in London, made by the cabinet maker who gave his name to the technique, André-Charles Boulle, c.1710.  The Boulle marquetry technique, or simultaneous cutting of both design elements and the background, allows for a perfect fit every time.

This course will introduce the materials, the tools and the techniques of Boulle marquetry cutting using a piercing saw.  The students will first be guided through the preparation of the materials and the packet used during the making of the marquetry.  Later in the day, the student will be able to practise using the piercing saw before cutting their own Boulle marquetry panel.  At the end of the day, the Boulle marquetry panel will be assembled on backing paper and taken away by the student for gluing on a flat panel or on a piece of furniture.

Class size is limited to 4 students. No previous experience in woodworking or marquetry/veneering is required.
