1- Bureau attributed to Pierre Gole, c.1670

Boughton House, Collection of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry

Boughton’s contre-partie desk was the second to be delivered by Pierre Gole to Louis XIV at Versailles in the 1670 and was almost certainly given to the first Duke of Montagu.  This prized desk has been in the collection of the Dukes of Buccleuch for centuries and is a very rare survival of Baroque furniture from the time of Louis XIV. Conservation became necessary following accidental damage during the transporting of the desk back from the Louis XIV exhibition at Versailles, following which it was carefully conserved and lightly cleaned. The conservation of the desk enabled us to unravel some new discoveries about the history and construction of the desk.
